The role of the BBFC

Some films and videos have things in them that can make viewers feel worried, confused or uncomfortable.

The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) wants audiences to enjoy watching films or online content, so their job is to view and classify films before general release.

Trailer 1 : Make notes as we watch the trailer of things you see.

Trailer 1 link:

Toy Story

We begin with brief moments of threat during a wedding ceremony where Rex the dinosaur finds himself poisoned – but we quickly learn this is just part of Bonnie’s playtime, with the toys all acting their parts! The comedy and reassuring outcome here helps to keep the threat very mild.

Though there are some further moments of threat in the trailer, including the readying of weapons by Buzz’s mini army and Woody dangling above a hungry pig, these are brief and very mild.

Panic, weapon use, asteroid destruction, crashes, and sustained fear—especially involving a child—create intense threat. Graphic violence and Mild language appears.

Jurassic World Dominion rating

The trailer combines awe, action, and horror as dinosaurs threaten humans: capsized boats, stalking, city chaos, children in danger, and terrifying attacks.

Familiar fantastical elements balance the intensity, but sustained peril and fear justify a 12A rating rather than PG.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 Trailer

Sense of threat in the trailer comes from Shadow, who is introduced as a powerful character and a new rival for Sonic and his friends. Several guards with guns as Shadow emerges from the smokey tube, which shows there is a sense of danger surrounding his character.

Afterwards, Sonic and Tails spot explosions in the city below where Shadow has escaped to and has already caused some destruction.

All together, these moments build up a sense of threat around Shadow’s character that some very young children might find scary. As a result of some of the more intense moments, we gave the trailer PG.
