Foreign bodies
Substances that do not belong in our body : exogenous/foreign bodies
  • Poisons
  • Pathogens: bacteria, viruses, parasites
  • Blood/organs from a donor

Slide 9 - Slide

Antigens
Cells, bacteria en viruses are covered with antigens.
Antigens = proteins on the outside of a cell
Cells can recognize each other using antigens.

If your body detects antigens from foreign bodies it will start an immune reaction

Slide 10 - Slide

Immune reaction
Pathogens entering your body = Infection
White blood cells will fight the pathogens:
  • Encapsulating (= eating) them
  • Making antibodies

Slide 11 - Slide

Antibodies
  • White blood cells make antibodies
  • Antibodies fit (like puzzle pieces) on antigens
  • Each antigen has its own antibody
  • Pathogens covered in antibodies are helpless, they die or are eaten by white blood cells.
Antibodies doing their job

Immunity
Immune = body 'knows' pathogen, It is quickly killed. You don't get ill.

Natural
Pathogen enters your body.

Body 'learns' how to make antibodies

Artificial
Using a vaccine containg a dead/weakened pathogen
Body safely 'learns' how to make antibodies
