Things to remember
  • The essay is literary, so focus on the book!!!
  • Make sure you support your thesis statement
  • The title of the book should have capital letters for the first letter and the title should be italicized. 
  • Example: To Kill a Mockingbird, The Help

Quotes
  •  Quotes should be put into quotation marks (not italicized) with page numbers. You want the punctuation of the sentence to come after the page number. 
  • Integrate the quotes. Use commas, not colons :
  • Don't end a paragraph with a quote!
  • Example: In the novel, Lee writes, ‘’Shoot all the bluejays you want, if you can hit 'em, but remember it's a sin to kill a mockingbird” (p. 90).
