Fractions

What is a fraction?

Well, a fraction is a way of using numbers to tell how much of something is left or how much is missing.

A fraction is made up of 2 parts

We are going to start with the denominator.

When you hear denominator

think -down- because the denominator is down, the bottom number.

We could use any shape to learn about fractions but we are going to use a circle.

Now I am going to show you how to figure out fractions!

A denominator is the bottom number on a fraction (remember, think "down"). The denominator tells how many possible pieces there are. Select how many pieces of pie there were and stick it below the black line.

OK, Let's Practice.

Remember, the denominator is the bottom number.

It tells how many possible pieces there are.

So... if we made a fraction for a pie, we'd need to know how many pieces of pie they cut. If we were doing pizza or cake, we'd need to know how many pieces of pizza or cake were cut.

That's how we find the denominator of a fraction.

If we made a fraction about this pizza, what would the denominator be?

A lady made a yummy cherry pie. She cut and served five pieces. What's the denominator for the fraction of that pie?

Is the denominator the top or bottom number on a fraction?

What is the other number?

Denominators go down. They are the bottom number.

What's the top number?

It's called the numerator.

The numerator tells how many pieces are left or how many are missing.

Practice #1

To find the numerator, all you have to do is count the pieces. Sometimes we count pieces that are missing and sometimes we count the pieces remaining.

We're going to start with the pieces missing.

This answers the question, "What fraction is missing?"
