What is BIOS?

BIOS stands for Basic Input/Output System. It contains the commands needed to start the computer. BIOS runs from a ROM chip and appears as you power up the computer.

What Can BIOS Do?

In BIOS, you can set the boot order, add a password for secure boot, control hardware like sound cards, set the date and time, and save any changes before restarting.

Advanced BIOS Features

BIOS allows overclocking, which speeds up the CPU. Overclocking can improve speed but may cause damage if not watched carefully. BIOS is now often replaced by UEFI, a modern version with more features.

What is ROM?

ROM stands for Read-Only Memory. It stores important information that does not change when the computer turns off. ROM is ideal for holding BIOS because it keeps data safe and uneditable by users.

Volatile vs Non-Volatile Memory

Loses data when power is off. Example: RAM (Random Access Memory).

Non-Volatile Memory

Keeps data even when power is off. Example: ROM (Read-Only Memory).

ROM is found in many devices—like printers, microwaves, and old game consoles. The software stored is called firmware, giving basic instructions for the device to work.
