What Is Past Simple?
Past Simple is used to describe finished actions in the past, often at a specific time.
Past Simple in Action
Example sentences: I watched a movie yesterday. She visited her grandma last week. They played soccer when they were kids.
Key Past Time Expressions
Common words: yesterday, last night/week/month/year, two days ago, when I was a child, in 2010.
Forming the Past Simple
No set rule. Common examples: go → went eat → ate see → saw buy → bought
Regular Verbs
Irregular Verbs
Add -ed to the base verb: walk → walked like → liked study → studied stop → stopped
Helpful Tip
Most used irregular verbs: was/were, had, did, went, saw, ate, made, said, got, came.
Sentence Structures
Affirmative
Subject + past verb + complement. Examples: I studied English. She went to the beach.
Negative
Subject + did not (didn’t) + base verb. Examples: I didn’t study. She didn’t go.
Questions in Past Simple
Did + subject + base verb + complement? Example: Did you study English? Short answers: Yes, I did. / No, I didn’t.
Verb to Be in the Past
Was/were do not use 'did'. I/he/she/it = was You/we/they = were Example: I was tired. They were happy.

Past Continuous
Action in progress in the past: I was eating dinner when you called. She was arriving when I saw her.
Past Simple
Completed action: I ate dinner at 7 PM. She arrived late.
