Lesson Objectives:

By the end of the session learners will be able to:

  1. Recall key knowledge from the previous lesson, including the Colour wheel, lightening curve, colour pigments and melanin types.

  2. Explain the difference between eumelanin and pheomelanin and identify the tones they produce in hair.

  3. Identify the different types of colouring products (temporary, semi-permanent, quasi-permanent and permanent) and describe how they affect the hair structure and colour molecules.

  4. Describe the role of hydrogen peroxide developers and explain how different strengths affect the colouring and lightening process.

  5. Apply product knowledge to salon scenarios, including selecting the correct developer strength and mixing ratios for grey coverage and controlled lightening.

Eumelanin

  • Cool toned- Black /Brown colour pigments

  • Harder to remove as the molecules are larger

Pheomelanin

  • Warmer toned- Yellow, Orange and Red tones.

  • Smaller molecules which are harder to remove.

Types of colouring products

How different colouring products effect the hair structure


For each colouring product, you need to be able to identify the following about each colouring product: 

  • What size colour molecules are found in the product?

  • How does the colour effect the hair structure?

Temporary Colour

  • Large colour molecules which stain the cuticle.

  • Does not penetrate into the cortex.

  • Lasts 1-2 shampoos.

Semi Permanent colour

  • Large and small colour molecules. 

  • Small colour molecules are deposited into the hair cuticle and outer edge of the hair cortex.

  • Colour will last 6-8 washes.

  • If the hair is unevenly porous, the result may be patchy.

Quasi permanent colour

  • Mixed with a low volume peroxide (1:2 ratio).

  • Small and medium colour molecules enter the cortex and oxidise by the oxidant (peroxide)

  • Due to low peroxide, the colour molecules do not become very large and are gradually lost each time the hair is shampooed. 

  • Lasts around 12 weeks.

Permanent colour

  • Mixed with hydrogen peroxide. 

  • The strength of the peroxide used varies depending on the desired result. Normally 4%, 6%, 9%, 12%.

  • When mixed with peroxide the small molecules penetrate through the cuticle and into the cortex.

Stronger peroxide does not mean a better blonde result. The aim is controlled, even lift while protecting the condition of the hair.

When using lightener, the approach is “slow and low.” This means choosing a lower strength developer, such as 1.9% or 4%, and allowing it to process for longer.

This helps you:

  • Lift the hair more evenly

  • Reduce damage

  • Maintain better hair health

  • Stay in control of the lightening process

Remember: it’s not about lifting as fast as possible — it’s about lifting safely and professionally.
