P7: Explain how sport and exercise could be used to treat a specific medical condition

Slide 1 - Slide

Your P7 task is to...

A medical condition can also be described as a psychosomatic illness. - which you've been going over with sir in the past couple of lessons.
Examples of Psychosomatic Illnesses?

Slide 2 - Mind map

so can you give some examples of some psychosomatic illnesses you've covered.
- Depression
- High blood pressure
- Stress
- Anxiety
- Eczema

Slide 3 - Slide

These are some main illnesses you have covered in P6 which was explaining the impact of sport and exercise on mental health and wellbeing. This links to your task for the next bit of the coursework which is P7. P7 asks you to explain how sport and exercise could be used to treat a specific medical condition.

Task: Research how sport and exercise can impact one medical condition.
Think:
- Short term
- Long term
- Can it prevent it?
- Can it reduce it?

Slide 4 - Slide

The task which makes it different from P6 to P7 is to research how sport and exercise impacts a medical condition.
When doing this, consider the short term effects, long term effects and whether  exercise can either prevent the effects of these illnesses or can it reduce them?

Slide 5 - Video

So you have already researched how sport is good for your wellbeing and health which links to depression so we will go through depression and exercise for the time being. This video is about the effects of exercise on depression and how it can help someone's wellbeing.
Short term Effects
Long Term Effects
Reduce
Endorphin's are released
Sleeping Issues
Poor Self-worth
Feel positive about own appearance and health
Reduce stress levels

Slide 6 - Drag question

Just as a short task, go through this drag and drop and match the effects to the category.
So, is sleeping issues a long term or short term effect of exercise that is linked with depression or is it reduced with exercise?

Slide 7 - Video

Now we know what the impact of exercise has on depression, you can look at What kind of exercise can be beneficial?

This example is cold water swimming. which has been on the news and publicized  a lot recently with Wim Hoff.

Slide 8 - Link

If you open this link, it gives a report from the BBC about cold water swimming.
If you open this into a new link and read what it says about it.

I'll give you about 8 minutes to read it and we'll come back together to discuss it.
Can cold water swimming positively impact depression? If so, how?

Slide 9 - Mind map

This item has no instructions

Slide 10 - Link

As well as having research from trusted sources and articles. Case studies are really helpful to have in this part of your coursework. So, if you open this case report and read through how exercise has impacted a person- it can give you an idea of what to include in your coursework and it can give real-life examples which fits into the "how exercise can be used to treat an illness".

Slide 11 - Slide

This is an example of some past work
which has included all the aspects we have looked at.
Have a read through to see what things to include when you write yours.
I will give you about 5 minutes to read through it and then we will move on.
What went well?
What else could be included?

Slide 12 - Slide

This is another example- have another read through and see what went well and what else could be included?

Slide 13 - Slide

To get evidence on how and why exercise can or can't be treated for some illnesses- google scholar is a good search engine.
You can: Type in a specific illness and exercise case report.
- Click on PDF link to right if have one and it should bring the whole case study up.

If it doesn't have the PDF link clinking on the main link should bring up an abstract of what the main ideas is.
Choose a psychosomatic illness:
- Depression
- Anxiety
-  High blood pressure
- Eczema
- Stress
Think:
1. What sport/ activity helps what illness?
2. How is this done?
4. Short term?- what is released?
5. Long term?- do these feelings last a long time?
6. Example? -case study example?
7. Who, why, what happened?

Slide 14 - Slide

So, choose an illness- only needs to be one.
Some things to think about when completing this: What sport/ activity helps what illness?
How is this done? - anything released/ what happens in the body? Do these feelings last a long time? And can you find any examples of a time this exercise has be used to treat this illness? - so a case study?
If so, who? why? what happened?

You can come off lessonup and start now. If you have lessonup in a tab i think you should be able to look back on the resources and answers you gave- if not just speak up and we can sort it.
Any questions?
