Goals
By the end of the lesson, you will know:
  • Why the river area must adapt to the changing climate
  • What measures are in the Room for the River plan;
  • Why the Netherlands need to store water in the deltas of Sealand and South Holland during heavy rainfall;

Slide 3 - Slide

Prior knowledge
You know why rivers may experience additional water discharge due to climate change
You know the names and location of the rivers we have in the Netherlands
De belangrijkste rivieren zijn de Rijn en de Maas.

Slide 4 - Slide

The drain of Europe
  • Netherlands is located in a delta
  • Vulnerable for water

When there falls a lot of rain in Germany we will notice it in the Netherlands

Slide 5 - Slide

Slide 6 - Video

What happened in 2021?
  • Water discharge varies by river and is not the same throughout the year.
  • The fluctuations in a river’s flow rate = regime
  • Amount of water flowing at a particular point = flow rate
  • In this situation the flow rate and regime were both really high

Slide 7 - Slide

Climate adaptation
= adjust and design the landscape to deal with the effects of climate change

Draw the river on the board
