Eastern Front: the Germans are in full retreat.

The Red Army pushes into Europe, towards Germany

But Stalin has not been happy with his Western Allies

He demands that they open a "Second Front" soon.

We are 

doing all the fighting.

Why don't 

the US and Britain    

 attack the Germans from the west?

          Give them a two                front war? 

Hmm, I don't 

trust Stalin.

           Nazis and Communists              killing each 

            other ?

Roosevelt and Churchill agree to a western invasion.

Preparations for Operation "Overlord" begin.

We must 

help Stalin.

The Allies will then attack the French Atlantic Coast

The day of the invasion : D-Day.

The Germans were building defenses along the entire Atlantic Coast

They called it: the Atlantic Wall

In charge of the Atlantic Wall was general Erwin Rommel

What did Stalin expect from the allies and why?

What is the Atlantic Wall?

1. An area where many boats shipwreck in the Atlantic
2. A wall separating East and Western Europe
3. A system of defense along the coast of Europe
4. A German Warship

The Germans had to be fooled into thinking that the invasion would happen near Calais, NOT Normandy.

How did the Allies do this?

1. A Fake Army was set up in the South East of England (Patton’s 1st Army)
2. The area around Calais was bombed more heavily than elsewhere
   
3. Fake planes, tanks and landing craft were built
   
4. German reconnaissance planes were only ‘allowed’ to fly over Kent, and see fake oil dock

• The British and Canadians were to land on GOLD, JUNO & SWORD
  
• They would move to capture the port of Caen
  
• The Americans were to land on UTAH & OMAHA
  
• They would aim to capture the port of Cherbourg
