Let's Learn Simple Maths Equations!
Let's Learn Simple Maths Equations!
What do you already know about basic maths equations?
Learning Objective
At the end of the lesson you will be able to solve simple addition and subtraction equations up to 20.
What is an Equation?
An equation uses numbers and symbols to show that two things are equal. The equals sign (=) means 'is the same as'.
Let's Look at Addition!
Addition means putting things together. For example, 2 + 3 = 5.
Try This Addition
What is 4 + 1? Let's count together!
Addition with Objects
If you have 3 pencils and get 2 more, how many do you have?
What is Subtraction?
Subtraction means taking away. For example, 5 - 2 = 3.
Try This Subtraction
If you start with 6 sweets and eat 2, how many are left?
A Subtraction Equation
7 - 4 = ? Let's count and find the answer!
Using Symbols
The plus sign (+) is for adding. The minus sign (-) is for subtracting. The equals sign (=) shows the answer.
Addition or Subtraction?
8 - 3 = 5
Addition Example
2 + 4 = 6
Subtraction Example
Using a Number Line
A number line can help you add or subtract by counting jumps forward or backward.
Let's Practise Together!
What is 3 + 2? What is 7 - 5? Try solving these on your own.
Work with Your Partner
Pair up and try to make some addition or subtraction equations. Help each other if you get stuck!
Why Is This Useful?
We use addition and subtraction in daily life, like shopping, cooking, and sharing with friends.
