What was a 'tribune"?

• When Rome became a republic, power was in the hands of the senate.
• The senators were rich "patricians". They made all the laws and decisions.
• The rest of the Romans, the "plebeians", had nothing to say.

494 BC

• The plebeians were angry. They had all the duties of citizens (paying taxes and serving in the army), but they had nothing to say.
• In 494 BC the plebeians went on strike. They stopped working and threatened to leave the city and start their own republic.
• The senators were scared. They set up the job of "tribune" to please the plebeians.

TRIBUNE

• So, what was a tribune and what did he do?
• a tribune was a representative of the plebeians.
• he advised the senate on the interests of the plebeians and protect their rights.
• A tribune could stop the Roman Senate from making a law by simply shouting, “Veto.”

Only patrician senators were allowed to wear a purple stripe in their white toga.
