*After this class my students can analyse song lyrics to get a better understanding of the song.

*After this class my students can use their writing skills to rewrite lyrics to a song.

What is PTSD?

*This lesson is about the effect of war on the brain.

*A lot of veterans are diagnosed with PTSD after war, but what does this mean?

*Lets talk about it.

Assignment 1: "19"

*What do you think the song "19" could be about?

*We are going to listen to the song: "19" by Paul Hardcastle.

*I want you to listen carefully.

What is the song about according to you?

*Now that we've listened to the song, I will hand you all a copy of the lyrics to this song.

*I want you to read them over once, tell me if there is anything that you do not understand about these lyrics, so I can help.

*Now, I want you all to read the lyrics while I play the song again,

*Now that we've listened to it again and read the lyrics, I want you to answer a few questions.

*The questions are on the next few slides.

Now that you've read the lyrics, what exactly is the song about according to you?

In what part can the mental struggle of the soldiers returning to America be seen/heard?

*Imagine:

 You are sent off to fight for your country in a foreign land. All around you is terror and you experience traumatic things. Do you think life would ever go back to the way it was once you’ve returned home?

 

Assignment 2: Change the lyrics

*Now, I want to you change the lyrics to the song, don't worry, you do not have to change the whole song.

*I want you to work in pairs, so you can help each other and have 2 brains working on this assignment.

*Some guidelines:

-I want you to change at least 5 sentences.

-The sentences have to have something to do with the Vietnam war or the aftermath of the war.
