What is BIOS?
BIOS stands for Basic Input/Output System. It is a small program that controls the computer’s start-up process. BIOS is stored on a chip and is the first software that loads when your computer is turned on.
Main Functions of BIOS
•Controls which drive to start from •Sets up password protection (secure boot) •Enables or disables devices •Sets date and time •Saves changes and restarts the computer

Real-World Examples
Some users use BIOS to overclock CPUs by changing their speed settings. However, this can damage the computer if done incorrectly and is not recommended for most users.
BIOS has been used in desktop computers since the 1980s. Today, it is often replaced by UEFI, a more modern version that can also be managed from within your operating system.
What is ROM?
ROM stands for Read-Only Memory. ROM chips hold important instructions that stay even when the computer is turned off. Because data cannot be easily changed, ROM is perfect for storing the BIOS.
Types of Memory
Volatile Memory
Loses data when power is off. Example: RAM (Random Access Memory).
Keeps data even when power is off. Example: ROM.
Non-Volatile Memory
ROM in Everyday Devices
ROM is used in devices like printers and microwaves to store instructions (firmware). Old video games also used ROM chips in cartridges, which is why these games are still called "ROMs".
