Singular and plural

This lesson looks at.....

  • Nouns that don't follow + s / +es rule in plural form

  • Nouns with the same form both singular and plural

  • Nouns that appear to be plural but are treated as singular

  • Nouns that appear to be singular but are treated as plural

  • Nouns that only have a plural form

  • Group nouns

  • GOAL: TO REMEMBER AND APPLY AS MUCH AS YOU CAN

The common ones

Man --> Men

Woman --> Women

Child --> Children

Tooth --> Teeth

Person --> people

Penny --> Pence

Foot --> Feet

Voor sommige van deze woorden moet je nagaan of je een werkwoord voor enkelvoud of meervoud moet gebruiken. Dat hangt af van de context van de zin.

Mouse --> Mice

Goose --> Geese

Ox --> Oxen

Louse --> lice

A fish .....................(to swim) in the sea.

Fresh water fish  ................(to live) in ponds and lakes.

  • police

  • contents (inhoud)

  • cattle (vee)

  • wages (loon)

  • stairs (trap)

  • savings (spaargeld)

  • surroundings (omgeving)

Deze zijn in het Engels allemaal meervoud

the cattle are grazing in the field

Voorwerpen die uit gelijke helften bestaan worden meervoud

Let op: na 'a' en na een telwoord (two, three, etc) gebruik je 'pair'

A pair of trousers         (niet 'a trousers')

A pair of jeans        (niet 'a jeans')

Two pairs of shorts         (niet 'two shorts')

Three pairs of scissors        (niet 'three scissors')

Bij combinaties met getallen gebruik je ook vaak meervoud:

  • It costs 20 euros (dus niet 20 euro!)

  • I'm 15 years old

Als het onderwerp meervoud is, is het object (lijdend voorwerp) vaak ook meervoud:

  • We had to put on our coats

  • Both boys had brought their bikes

Sommige woorden hebben in ev en mv dezelfde vorm
