In 1948, the South African government made new laws to keep the white and black people apart. This system was called 'apartheid'.

Nelson Mandela, a politician, fought against this system and spent 27 years in prison as a result.
A few years after he was released, he became the first black President of South Africa. After his death he is still seen as a hero and is mostly remembered for bringing people together to live in peace.
