Amsterdam first started as a settlement build on a dam nearby the amstel river, wich flows in to the IJ (open water)(Agua Abierta)

Amsterdam as a trading city
  • 1200-1585 - Amsterdam was growing as a trading city, the first canal ring where builded to get goods ashore at the warehouses (Pakhuizen)

1585-1672 - large trading companies (V.O.C.), traded in various goods worldwide. 
As a result, Amsterdam grew and with that the second canal ring came and covered the east-side of the city.

Paleis op de dam (City hall)
  • Paleis op de Dam (Palacio real de Ámsterdam)
  • was builded in 1655 on behalf of regents.
  • Then it's function was a city hall, now its in hands of the dutch royal family.

  • The central station was builded in 1889, by reclaiming land in the IJ
