The Know-Nothing Party

Also known as the "American Party".
- rooted in a secret organization known as the "Order of the Star -Spangled Banner"

Focused on nativism and anti-Catholic sentiment.
- When Nativists formed the American Party, it soon became known as the "Know-Nothing Party".

Antislavery Parties

Liberty Party:
- New York. Small party that pursued the cause of abolition by passing new laws.

Rise of the Republican Party

Formed in the 1850s as a response to slavery. (Jackson, Michigan)

Opposed the expansion of slavery into new territories.

Gained popularity and political strength.

Supreme Court ruling stating slaves are property.


Declared that slaves are not citizens (Slaves were considered property, not people).

Main subject: slavery's expansion into territories.

Attempted uprising at Harpers Ferry led by John Brown.

Lincoln's victory convinced southerners that they has lost their political voice in the national government.


South Carolina led the secession (December 20, 1860).
