Bright Ideas: How Eyes Help Us See!

What do you already know about how your eyes see light?

Learning Objective

At the end of the lesson you will understand how light travels, how our eyes work, and how eyes respond to different amounts of light.

What Do You Already Know?

Think about how we see. What role do you think light plays in seeing things around you?

Natural and Artificial Light Recap

Natural light comes from the Sun. Artificial light comes from things like light bulbs and torches.

How Do We See Objects?

Light travels from a light source, hits an object, and then bounces into our eyes so we can see.

Steps to Success

1. Describe how light travels from source to eye. 2. Explain the function of parts of the eye. 3. Describe how the eye adapts to light in the environment.

How Does Light Travel?

Light travels in straight lines. It can reflect (bounce) off things or pass through them if they are see-through.

Parts of the Human Eye

The main parts are: cornea, pupil, lens, iris, and retina. Each part helps us to see.

The Cornea and Lens

The cornea is the clear outer layer. The lens behind the pupil focuses light to make a clear image.

What Do the Iris and Pupil Do?

The iris is the coloured part of your eye. It controls the size of the pupil, which lets in more or less light.

The Retina: Our Screen

The retina is at the back of your eye. It receives light and sends signals to the brain, so you can see!

How Does the Eye Change?

Your pupils get bigger in the dark and smaller in bright light. This helps us see in different environments.

Experiment: Pupil Reaction

Look at your eyes in the mirror. What happens to your pupils when you turn the lights off and on?

Thinking Like a Scientist

Why do pirates wear eye patches? When moving into the dark, one eye is already used to low light, helping them see faster!

Quick Quiz: Understanding Our Eyes

Light can bend around corners. (False) The retina sends messages to the brain. (True) Bright light makes pupils bigger. (False)

Some animals have eyes that can see in the dark much better than us!

True or False?

Did You Know?

Recap: What Have We Learned?

You can explain: - How light travels - The main parts of the eye - How our eyes change in different light

Now You Try!

Draw and label your own diagram of the human eye. Include as many parts as you can. Write a sentence about how your eye adapts to light changes.

Write down 3 things you learned in this lesson.

Write down 2 things you want to know more about.

Ask 1 question about something you haven't quite understood yet.
