Understanding Place Values

Place values represent the

position of digits.

Ones, Tens, and hundreds.

Pass out place value chart. Ones, Tens and Hundreds.

Bundling by Ten

Bundling a number by ten changes its place value. It moves it one spot to the left on the place value chart.

Example: 10 ones is 1 ten

Use this chart to help illustrate where the one is traveling when we bundle by tens.

Interactive Activity

We are going to use "number pieces" to practice bundling by ten.

I will mirror my screen to help students navigate to number pieces.

Each student will have number pieces on their individual device.

We will make a bunch of ones and bundle those by ten.

Now what?

What can we do with our bundles of ten? Can we bundle them? What do we get?

On number pieces I will have the kids bundle the groups of ten into bundles of ten. We are bundling into hundreds.

10 bundles of ten is 100!

Where does that go on our place value chart?

Show them that the one is moving again to the hundreds place on the chart.
