Slide 11 - Mind map

What is the past tense of to be?

Slide 12 - Open question

Instruction
Some verbs do not get -ed at the end to indicate the past
(regular verbs, example: walk-walked)

Irregular verbs don't follow a rule, you have to learn them by heart. (short list on page 254, full list on page 269)

Slide 13 - Slide

Instruction
Irregular verbs change when you want to indicate the past
for example; become - became, think - thought, hear -heard, write - wrote, go - went, do -did

There is no logic or rule behind this. Just like Dutch 'strong' verbs (lopen - liep, brengen - bracht, etc.)

Slide 14 - Slide

Instruction
When using an irregular verb in the past tense in a question or negation the same rules as regular verbs apply

I walked - Did I walk? - I did not walk
I thought - Did I think? - I did not think
I went - Did I go? - I did not go
