What do you already know about how animals are classified?

Why Classify Animals?

Classification helps scientists organise and understand the diversity of life. It groups animals with similar characteristics, making study and communication easier.

Levels of Classification

Animals are classified into hierarchical categories: Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species.

Kingdom Animalia

This kingdom includes all animals. Animals are multicellular, eukaryotic organisms that can move and consume organic material.

Major Animal Phyla

Key phyla include Chordata, Arthropoda, Mollusca, Annelida, and Cnidaria. Each has unique traits.

Classifying Vertebrates

Vertebrates are animals with a backbone and include fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals.

Classifying Invertebrates

Invertebrates lack a backbone and include insects, arachnids, molluscs, and others. They make up the majority of animal species.
