What Are Pathogens?
Pathogens are microorganisms that cause diseases. They include bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites.
Types of Pathogens
Bacteria are single-celled organisms, viruses are non-living infectious agents, fungi and parasites are other types that can cause disease.
Germ Theory of Disease
Germ theory states that many diseases are caused by the presence and actions of specific microorganisms inside the body.
Koch's Experiments
Robert Koch helped prove germ theory. He showed that specific bacteria cause specific diseases by identifying and isolating bacteria from sick animals.
How Do Pathogens Cause Disease?
Pathogens enter the body, multiply, and damage tissues. Some produce toxins that cause symptoms.
Viruses vs. Bacteria: Infection Methods
Multiply on their own. Can produce toxins or physically invade tissues to cause symptoms.
Inject genetic material into host cells. Hijack the cell, forcing it to create more viruses, destroying the cell.

How Diseases Spread
Infectious diseases spread via air, physical contact, water, food, or vectors such as mosquitoes.
Direct vs. Indirect Transmission
Direct: Person-to-person (touching, sneezing). Indirect: Surfaces, food, water, or animals pass the pathogen.
Disease Reservoirs
A disease reservoir is a place where pathogens live and reproduce, such as animals, humans, soil, or water.
Symptoms of Disease
Symptoms are caused by tissue damage, toxins, or immune responses. They can help identify the disease.
Disease Patterns: Outbreak to Pandemic
Disease can occur as isolated cases, local outbreaks, epidemics, or global pandemics.
Factors Affecting Disease Spread
Population density, travel, hygiene, and immunity influence how quickly diseases spread.
Treating Infectious Diseases
Bacterial infections can be treated with antibiotics. Viral infections may be treated with antivirals or prevented by vaccines.
Fighting Disease: Prevention
Hand washing, vaccination, and safe food handling are effective prevention methods.
