What is a Mixture?

A mixture is a combination of two or more substances that are not chemically bonded and can be separated by physical means.

Why Separate Mixtures?

Separating mixtures allows us to obtain pure substances, remove impurities, and recycle useful materials in everyday life and industry.

Physical Methods of Separation

Used to separate insoluble solids from liquids. Example: removing sand from water.

Evaporation

Filtration

Used to recover dissolved solids from solutions. Example: getting salt from seawater.

Using a Magnet

Magnets are used to separate magnetic materials, such as iron filings, from non-magnetic substances like sand.

Distillation

Distillation separates mixtures based on boiling points. It's commonly used to purify liquids, like turning salty water into fresh water.

Sedimentation:
Sedimentation is a method used to separate insoluble solids from a liquid. When a mixture is left undisturbed, the heavier solid particles settle at the bottom of the container due to gravity. The solid that settles at the bottom is called sediment.

Decantation:
Decantation is the process used after sedimentation. In this method, the clear liquid on top is carefully poured into another container without disturbing the settled solid at the bottom. This helps separate the liquid from the solid.

Choosing the Right Technique

Selecting a separation method depends on the properties of the components. Think about particle size, solubility, and magnetic properties.
