Learning Objectives

  2. Describe key characteristics of each planet (e.g., size, composition, distance from the Sun, unique features).

  3. Explain the difference between a planet and a dwarf planet.

  4. Illustrate the relative positions of the planets in the solar system.

  5. Appreciate the vastness and complexity of the universe.

Materials:


  • Whiteboard or projector

  • Markers or pens

  • Images or diagrams of the solar system and individual planets

  • Videos (e.g., animated tours of the solar system)

  • Worksheets with blank solar system diagrams for labeling

  • Optional: Model of the solar system (e.g., inflatable planets, Styrofoam balls)

  • Optional: Chart paper and colored markers for group activity

Introduction (5 minutes)


  1. Engage: Begin by asking students what they already know or wonder about the solar system.

    • "What do you think makes up our solar system?"

    • "Have you ever looked at the night sky and wondered what's out there?"

  2. Brainstorm: Write down student responses on the board.

  3. Hook: Show a captivating image or a short, exciting video clip of the solar system or a specific planet.

A. Introduction:

  1. Engage: Ask students: "What do you imagine is in our solar system?" or "What's the center of our solar system?"

  2. Hook: Quickly display an exciting image or a 30-second video of the solar system. B. Journey Through the Solar System (20 minutes)

    1. The Sun: Briefly introduce the Sun as the center and source of energy.

    2. The Planets -

      • Mercury: Venus: Hottest, cloudy.Earth: Our home, life, water.

      • Mars: Red Planet, possibility of water.

        • (Briefly mention the Asteroid Belt between Mars and Jupiter)

        • Jupiter: Largest, Great Red Spot Saturn: Rings!Uranus: Tilted on its side.

        • Neptune: Farthest, windy.

      • Quickly differentiate: Mention inner planets are rocky, outer are gas giants.

      • Dwarf Planets

B. Journey Through the Solar System (20 minutes)

  1. The Sun: Briefly introduce the Sun as the center and source of energy.

  2. The Planets - A Quick Tour:

    • Go through the planets in order, using visuals. For each, mention its name and one distinguishing feature.

      • Mercury: Closest, very hot/cold.

      • Venus: Hottest, cloudy.

      • Earth: Our home, life, water.

      • Mars: Red Planet, possibility of water.

      • (Briefly mention the Asteroid Belt between Mars and Jupiter)

      • Jupiter: Largest, Great Red Spot.

      • Saturn: Rings!

      • Uranus: Tilted on its side.

C. Activity: Map Our Solar System (10 minutes)

  3. Circulate to check understanding and assist
