Double genitive

I have borrowed a book of Jack's.

She is a teacher of my brother's.

He's a cousin of mine.

Double Genitive

Een andere manier om over bezit te praten is door de zogeheten double genitive te gebruiken.

Je gebruikt double genitive om over één van meerdere dingen te praten die iemand/iets bezit.

Double Genitive

Je kan de double genitive op twee manieren maken:

1) noun (zelfstandig naamwoord)+ of + possessive pronoun (mine, yours, his, hers, ours, theirs)

Bijvoorbeeld:

That is a friend of hers.     Dat is een vriend van haar.

He is a student of mine      Hij is een leerling van mij

Double Genitive

2) noun (zelfstandig naamwoord)+ of + possessive adjective (my, your, his, her, our, their) + noun + possessive ‘s

Bijvoorbeeld:

This is the bike of my dad’s      Dit is de fiets van mijn vader

Double Genitive 

Use: To talk about something the subject has. 

How:

Noun + of + possessive pronoun/adjective

ex: Julie is a friend of mine

or

Noun + of + possessive pronoun + noun + possessive 's 

ex: Julie is the sister of my neighbour's 

Double genitive - rewrite the sentence
Jack is my neighbour.

Double genitive - rewrite the sentence
She is our teacher.

Double genitive - rewrite the sentence
He is Jack's cousin
