Summative vs. Formative
Testing in MYP

Slide 2 - Slide

Summatives
The goal of summative assessment is to evaluate student learning at the end of an instructional unit by comparing it against some standard or benchmark.

Summative assessments are often high stakes, which means that they have a high point value.

Slide 3 - Slide

Formatives
The goal of formative assessment is to monitor student learning to provide ongoing feedback that can be used by instructors to improve their teaching and by students to improve their learning while working on a unit.
More specifically, formative assessments:
- help students identify their strengths and weaknesses and target areas that need work.
- help faculty recognise where students are struggling and address problems immediately.

Three questions for Learning
Use of learning targets: Where am I going?

Evidence of student understanding: Where am I now?

Plan for improvement: How can I close the gap?

Slide 5 - Slide

Formatives
Any task or activity can be used for formative evaluation.
It should give students an insight as to where they are in their learning process.

Formative tasks will help answer the following question:
"where am I now?"

Slide 6 - Slide

Formatives
Formative evaluation can be used to help students understand how to "close the gap"

It should be building up towards the summative task

It should not be marked

Summatives MYP
Each subject in MYP has 4 different criteria that need to be assessed.
Each Criteria needs to be assessed minimum twice a year.

Depending on the subject/department, a summative task can be assessing 1-4 criteria.

We use Rubrics to mark the criteria. Students get a mark out of 8
