You and gender norms
Most people think in gender norms       (we are used to them).
Look at your own list and decide:
Which things of your list would you say are typically:
  • Feminine
  • Masculine
  • Neither feminine or masculine

Examples
Examples of gender norms
Masculine
  • Be tough
  • Play soccer/ ball sports
  • Short hair
  • Drink beer
  • Conquer women
  • Don't talk about feelings
Feminine
  • Gentle / subordinate
  • Dance
  • Talk a lot
  • Do cooking
  • Do housekeeping
  • Long hair
  • Take care of children
Gendernormen zijn gedrag en uiterlijk die we typisch vinden voor een bepaald gender.
Mensen gebruiken dit om bijv te bepalen of iemand man of vrouw is.
Als iemand niet matcht met deze normen vinden sommige mensen dat moeilijk.

What you feel like, on the inside.
For some people this feeling can change during their lives.
Others will find out that they always had a different feeling.
Example:
You feel that you are a man
How you show yourself to others.
For some people it can be quite difficult to discover their gender.
Example:
Your clothes/behaviour/appearance makes people say that you are a woman
What gender/people you find sexually interesting.
Orientation is mostly fixed, it is not something that just changes (or can change). Though it might take some time to discover your orientation.
Example:
You don't care about the gender of the other person, you are pan sexual
Decided by your DNA, it is not something you can decide or change. You are born that way.
Example:
You DNA contains an X and Y chromosome, this makes you a man.

Out of the closet
Different sexualities and genders are more accepted nowadays.
Still 'things' can get in the way:
  • Stereotypes/gender norms
  • Cultures
  • Religion
  • Own feelings/thoughts
  • Laws/rules
Stereotype = an idea people have about a certain group of people, often incorrect.
Example: gay men like to go shopping.

Gender norm = different types of behaviour/ appearance/ clothes that people view as typically male of female
Example: women have long hair
