Exploring Science in Our World

What do you already know about science in your everyday life?

Learning Objective

At the end of the lesson you will know what science is and how it helps us understand the world around us.

What is Science?

Science is how we learn about the world using our senses, asking questions, and making discoveries.

The Five Senses

We use sight, hearing, touch, taste, and smell to explore and investigate.

Asking Questions

Scientists start by being curious. They ask questions like: What will happen if...? Why is this like that?

Observing

Observing means looking closely at things to see what happens. What can you observe around you?

Doing Experiments

Experiments are tests we do to find answers. We try things out and see what happens.

Science in Action

Examples: Mixing colours, planting seeds, or floating objects in water are simple experiments.

Living and Non-Living Things

Science helps us tell the difference between things that are alive and things that are not.

Examples of Living Things

Plants, animals, and people are living. They grow, move, and need food and water.

Examples of Non-Living Things

Rocks, toys, and water are non-living. They do not grow or breathe.

Why Science Matters

Science helps us understand the world. It helps us stay healthy, safe, and curious.

Science Around Us

Everyday things like weather, plants growing, and using light all involve science.

Describing Objects

Shape, colour, and size are ways we can describe things.

Soft, hard, rough, or smooth are ways to describe touch.

What can you feel?

What can you see?

Sorting and Grouping

We can use science to put things into groups by what they are like. Try sorting objects in your class.

Light and Dark

Science explains why we have day and night. The sun is our main source of light.

Shadows

When something blocks light, it makes a shadow. Can you see your shadow?

Weather Watch

Rain, sun, wind, and snow are types of weather. Observing the weather is science too!

Keeping Safe with Science

Science helps us know how to stay safe around hot things, sharp objects, and in the sun.

You Are a Scientist!

Whenever you explore, ask questions, and try new things, you are doing science!

Write down 3 things you learned in this lesson.

Write down 2 things you want to know more about.

Ask 1 question about something you haven't quite understood yet.
