How do you write a sentence in indirect speech?
  1. Your indirect speech sentence should look like this: 
    name/personal pronoun + said/told (that) + what was said:

  2. The man said that he had been away for 5 years.

Direct speech
"How old are you?" the man asked.
The little boy looked at the man suspiciously for a minute and then said, "I am twenty-six."
His mother lifted her head from the book. "He is four," she said, smiling at the little boy.
"Is that so?" the man said politely to the little boy, "Twenty-six." 
He nodded his head at the mother across the aisle. "Is that your mother?"
The little boy leaned forward to look and then said, "Yes, that's her."

Indirect speech
The man asked the boy how old he was.

Bij indirect speech verander je ook vaak het persoonlijk voornaamwoord, bezittelijk voornaamwoord en de tijdsaanduiding in de zin.


Trish: 'We don't like shopping.'
Trish said (that) they didn't like shopping.
