Introduction

Colonists tried to see African people as goods and not as individuals. The enslaved were chained with these shackles and traded. Because of this they were dehumanized and robbed of their identity.

Colonists are people who settle in a new country.
There were about 12 to 14 million people enslaved and shipped to America.

(Nee!)
In the 18th and 19th centuries, the Netherlands earned a lot of money from the trade and exploitation of enslaved people. This seems like a long time ago, but still has an effect on the present. The appearance of Black Pete, for example, is probably based on the stereotype of black people in the 19th century.
A stereotype is a fixed image of something or someone that does not accurately reflect reality.
