Unit Description
A comprehensive, interdisciplinary approach to honey bees and their interactions and impact on our ecosystem and society as a whole. Student-driven inquiry through writing, verbal expression, artistic movement, community based events, community outreach, expository text, research, and pretend play.

              The Honey Makers
We use the book The Honey Makers as an anchor to guide each learning experience, incorporating literacy throughout.

Central Focus:
This unit focuses on bees and their role in pollination, their community, as well as our ecosystem. Using an anchor text throughout the unti, students will explore bees with a specific focus on pollination, honey production, community interaction and interdependence.

  • Interdependent Relationships in Ecosystems:
  • Plants depend on animals for pollination or to move their seeds around. 
  • The function of an animal in dispersing seeds or pollinating plants. 
  • Make observations of plants and animals to compare the diversity of life in different habitats.

Language Arts
  • Reading: "The Honey Makers"; identify key elements, analyze & evaluate content, ask & answer questions, 
  • Writing: Opinion piece; state an opinion, supply reasons that support the opinion, use linking words to connect opinion and reasons, and provide a conclusion.

Mathematics
  • Work with money: Solve problems involving dollar bills, quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies, using $ and ¢ symbols appropriately.
  • Represent and solve problems involving addition and subtraction.
  • Count within 1000; skip-count by 5s, 10s, and 100s.

  • Geography, People, & The Environment: Plan and participate in an advocacy project to inform others about environmental issues at the local or state level and propose possible solutions.
  • Civics, Government, & Human Rights: Select a local issue and develop a group action plan to inform school and/or community members about the issue.
