Visuals

The things you see often support the things you hear, or they give extra information. In real life or in videos, you can use what you see (the visuals) to help you understand what is being said. Of course, in movies or series you can literally see what is happening (the context). If you don’t understand what someone is saying, you can still understand what they’re doing because you can see them do it, or because you notice their body language.

In other videos, like tutorials or interviews, the creator can add visual effects to support what is being said.  For example:

• Words and names can be used to emphasise words, to introduce people or to introduce a (new) topic. They also help you to remember the information.
  
• Numbers and graphs are mostly used to organise the information and facts presented in the video.
  
• Graphics, like drawings, animations and images can be used to show information, explain what is being said, or to make a video more attractive.

3.4: Listening- Exercise 1

In video 1, Ed Sheeran and his team explain how the song ‘Shape of You’ was created. Watch video 1 up to 00:41. You don’t have to understand every detail, so don’t worry if you don’t know what certain words or sentences mean.

A) First, just look at the visuals in this part. What visual aspects (kenmerkende dingen die zichtbaar zijn) do you notice about the video?

B) What do these visual aspects tell you? Mention at least two things.

C) Listen to what is said in this introduction, why is it so special that ‘Shape of You’ was recorded by Ed Sheeran?

Answers

A) The names of the people in the video, graphics that move with the music, information about the song.

B) For instance:

They show the names of the people you see in the video.

They give information about what the people in the video do (for instance: songwriter and producer),

They give extra information on how popular the song is.

The shapes in the background show the rhytm of the music, they visualise the beat.

C) The team got together to write a song, but not for Ed Sheeran.
