A Quick Guide with Examples

1. Gerund as Subject


✅ When the action itself is the subject.

Example:

• Swimming is good exercise.

(‘Swimming’ is the subject of the sentence.)

2. After Certain Verbs


✅ Some verbs are followed by a gerund (not an infinitive).

Common verbs: enjoy, avoid, admit, deny, suggest, finish, consider, keep, mind, miss, practice

Examples:

• She enjoys dancing.

• He avoided talking to his boss.

• I suggest leaving early.

3. After Prepositions


✅ A verb after a preposition must be a gerund.

Examples:

• They left without saying goodbye.

• I’m interested in learning Spanish.

• She’s good at drawing.

4. After Certain Expressions


✅ Expressions: can’t help, it’s no use, it’s worth, be busy, feel like

Examples:

• I can’t help laughing at that joke.

• It’s no use crying over spilled milk.

• She’s busy preparing for her trip.

5. Compound Nouns & Fixed Expressions


✅ Gerunds appear in compound nouns/fixed phrases.

Examples:

• a swimming pool

• a walking tour

• a driving lesson

Quick Tip to Spot Gerunds


✴️ If the -ing word acts as a noun, it’s a gerund.

Compare:

• Running is fun. → Gerund (noun/subject)

• She is running every day. → Not a gerund (part of a verb tense)

Choose the sentence with a gerund phrase.
