  • In the next few slides, we will be covering the range of products you will be using within a facial treatment.

  • You will cover, Function, properties and how to use them.

Eye make-up remover

Benefits:

  • Remove oil based or water-based products from the eye area.

  • Cleanses the eyelid and the lashes; gently emulsifying the eye make-up.

  • Conditions the delicate eye area.

Types of eye make-up remover

  • Gel

  • Lotion

  • Non-oily remover- good for sensitive skin, clients who wear contact lenses and those with individual lashes.

  • Oily remover- good for clients who wear waterproof mascara and removing wax or oil-based eyeshadow.

This light cleansing gel formula is perfect for the delicate eye area. It is gentle on the eyes but effective in removing make up. Will leave skin looking refreshed, soft and revitalized.

Types of cleanser

  • Foaming gels, cleansing lotions- use for an oily skin type.

  • Cleansing lotion- use on a combination skin.

  • Alpha hydroxy acids (dissolve bonds between the cells)‏

What is an emollient moisturiser

  • Emollients are moisturising treatments applied directly to the skin to soothe and hydrate it.

  • They cover the skin with a protective film to trap in moisture.

  • Emollients are often used to help manage dry, itchy or scaly skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis.

Skin Types

As a therapist you are required to establish a client skin type and conditions

Assessing the skin you can then create a tailor made treatment plan to suit and get the most benefit out of the treatment you carry out.


You will be looking for:

  • Skin type- Normal/balanced, dry, combination or oily

  • Skin texture: fine, medium or coarse

  • Colour tone: discoloration from pigmentation, pink areas

  • Muscle tone: poor, average, good, deep lines, fine lines

  • Skin conditions: mature, sensitive or dehydrated skin conditions

  • Specific problems: comedones, milia, congestion


Normal/Balanced Skin


  • Medium to fine texture

  • Healthy vibrant glow

  • Even distribution of secretions/oil

  • No blemishes/open pores


Dry skin

  • Fine texture or slightly coarse if very dry or neglected

  • Paler tone, pinkish or rosy due to dilated capillaries

  • Matt or crepey appearance

  • Flaky patches or leathery look

  • More transparent

  • Capillaries possibly visible though the skin’s surface

  • No prominent pores

  • Warm to the touch

Sensitive skin

  • Can have a coarse or delicate texture

  • Prone to blemishes

  • Has a rosy appearance

  • Is warm to the touch

  • Burns easily in the sun

  • Rapid change in colour when exposed to temperature change

  • Might be reactive to touch and colour easily

  • Might be sensitive to product ingredients and susceptible to allergic reactions


Mature skin

  • Skin has a padded appearance- caused by the slowing of skin cell renewal

  • Lines and wrinkles are visible

  • Can be dull or lifeless

  • Can lack colour

  • Papery appearance

  • Crepey appearance

  • Loss of elasticity and muscle tone

  • Pigmentation changes

  • Lentigines or Chloasma


Dehydrated skin

  • Texture may depend on skin type

  • May feel tight

  • Fine lines may be visible on gentle squeezing

  • Skin may not spring back easily

  • Very fine lines around the eye area and jaw

  • Skin absorbs products rapidly

Contraindication/ contra-action

Contraindication

  • A contraindication is a skin/nail condition, symptom or medical condition that could prevent or restrict a treatment from taking place.

  • Preventing a treatment would stop the treatment from taking place completely.

  • Restricting a treatment would not necessarily stop a treatment but it may cause the treatment to be modified in the area treated.

Contra-action

  • A contra-action is a reaction to the treatment being carried out, this could happen during or after a treatment has taken place.

  • All the above should be noted on the client record card if this occurs.
