Dividing Made Simple: Sharing and Grouping

What do you already know about division?

Learning Objective

At the end of the lesson you will be able to solve simple division problems by sharing and grouping objects.

What is Division?

Division means splitting things into equal groups.

When do we Use Division?

We use division when we want to share or group objects fairly.

Division as Sharing

Let’s share 6 toys between 2 friends. Each gets 3 toys!

Division as Grouping

We can also put 6 toys into groups of 2. How many groups do we have? 3!

The Division Sentence

6 ÷ 2 = 3. This means 6 shared by 2 is 3 in each group.

The Division Symbol

We use ÷ to show we are dividing in maths.

Let’s Try Together!

If we share 8 apples between 4 friends, how many apples does each get?

Solving by Sharing

Give one apple to each friend until all apples are gone. Each gets 2 apples!

Solving by Grouping

Put the 8 apples into groups of 2. How many groups can you make? 4 groups!

Hands-On Practice

Use counters or blocks to make your own groups and share them with a friend.

Quick Quiz

There are 10 sweets. Share with 5 friends. How many sweets does each get?

Can You Solve This?

12 pencils are shared equally between 3 people. How many does each have?

Remember

Division is about making equal groups by sharing or grouping.

You can now divide things into equal groups in two easy ways!
