Een team van experts gespecialiseerd in de genetica van neanderthalers heeft een stukje dna onderzocht dat wordt geassocieerd met de meer ernstigere gevallen van Covid-19. Dat stukje dna is vergeleken met dna-strengen waarvan duidelijk is dat die zijn doorgegeven aan Europeanen en Aziaten die afstammen van neanderthalers. Mensen die het erfelijke materiaal hebben, hebben volgens de onderzoekers drie keer meer kans om beademd te moeten worden als ze ziek worden van het coronavirus.
