Opsomming

Signaalwoorden die aangeven dat er een opsomming is van meerdere onderdelen. Meerdere voorbeelden of onderdelen die bijdragen bij aan het hoofdpunt in die zin of alinea.

Voorbeelden:

• I like playing football, as well as, volleybal.
• I love being out side, moreover I do not care if it is cold or raining.
• That boy is rude. First of all, he didn't say hello, secondly, he didn't shake my hand, lastly ,he never thanked me for the gift.

Oorzaak en gevolg

Deze signaalwoorden geven aan dat er hierna een reden wordt gegeven waarom iets is gebeurt (oorzaak) en/of wat er hierdoor gaat gebeuren (gevolg).

Voorbeelden:

• As you were not there, I left a message.
• We all got food poisoning, due to the bad take out food.
• He brought news of the accident, hence we listen to him attentively.

He should not be doing this job, ... he was not trained for it.

Tegenstelling 

Als je deze signaalwoorden tegenkomt in een tekst, weet je dat de schrijver een andere kant opgaat in zijn tekst dan ervoor. De schrijver gebuikt bijvoorbeeld een argument tegen wat ervoor was gezegd. 

Voorbeelden:

• She is a lovely girl, nevertheless she needs to study harder if she wants to pass her exam.
• I love chocolate as much as the next person, still it is not a healthy snack.
• Peter runs every day, unlike his wife, who never runs.

Vergelijking 

Als je deze signaalwoorden tegen komt in een tekst, weet je dat het genoemde dan hetzelfde als iets anders is of er mee te vergelijken is. 

voorbeelden:

• Amsterdam is small, compared to New York.
• The Alps are equally as impressive as the Rocky Mountains.

Voorwaarde 

Door deze signaalwoorden weet je dat er een voorwaarde aan iets wordt gesteld in de tekst. Doordat er aan iets voldaan wordt, kan er iets anders gebeuren. 

Voorbeelden:

• I'll give you a treat, provided you work hard during training.
• Unless you open the door, you will not be able to get into that room.

Voorbeeld & Relativering

Je hebt signaalwoorden die een voorbeeld aangeven. 

Voorbeeld: Some animals live in packs, such as wolves and lions. 

Je hebt ook signaalwoorden die aangeven dat er een relativering volgt. Relativering is iets dat verband houdt met iets dat al eerder is gezegd. Het heeft ermee te maken, maar het is niet hetzelfde of een voorbeeld. 

Voorbeeld: He was angry, actually he was absolutely furious.

Conclusie 

Als je deze signaalwoorden tegenkomt in een tekst, weet je dat de schrijver aan het einde is gekomen van bijvoorbeeld zijn verslag of zijn opsomming van argumenten. 

Voorbeelden:

• He got a promotion, after all, he works hard.
• All in all, it was a lovely day.

Tijd / Volgorde

Signaalwoorden die een tijd aangeven lijken misschien makkelijk, maar worden vaak over het hoofd gezien, terwijl ze vaak belangrijk zijn om het juiste antwoorde te vinden.

Let ook goed op of er tijd-signaalwoorden in de vraag staan.
