FAKE!

The last section of a URL is very important to get right! Different sites use different domains (eg .com, .org) - if you use the wrong one you won't be on the genuine site.

www.amaẓon.co.uk

FAKE!

Cybercriminals can use fake characters that look like the real one to trick you into using the wrong site. In this example, the Z has a dot below it.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/cart/view.html?ref_=nav_cart

REAL!

The URL starts with what we know is the genuine Amazon UK site. The forward slashes / after are just pages within that genuine site.

evri.link/E3HyDy

REAL!

Even though it might look fake, this is a genuine Evri tracking link. The key thing is to be aware of whether you are expecting a link, and if you're not sure, go via what you know is the genuine site (in this case www.evri.com)

Online Abuse and Harassment

Professional footballers routinely face:

  • Racist abuse

  • Sexist and misogynistic harassment

  • Threats and doxxing

How do you feel about the amount of time you spent on social media?

Discussion

Do you feel young academy players can be exploited online?

Think about those desperate to become a footballer??

Discuss...

Exploitation

Grooming and Exploitation Risks

  • Youth athletes are vulnerable to:

    • Fake agents

    • Impersonators posing as scouts, sponsors, or fans

    • Requests for images or private conversations

  • Many clubs now train young players on:

    • Verifying contacts

    • Platform privacy settings

    • Escalation procedures if contacted inappropriately

What does the term "digital footprint" mean?

Digital footprints are a trail of places that you have visited on the internet.

You leave a tiny digital marker or footprint behind each time you:

  • visit a website

  • click on a link

  • tap on a video

  • play an online game

Can you get rid of your digital footprint? How?

While you might be able to delete your posts, comments and anything else you've put online, this doesn't necessarily mean they are gone forever.

Someone else could have taken a screenshot, which could then be re-uploaded, or the activity may be captured in a web archive.

Sextortion

What is sextortion?

Sextortion is a type of online blackmail. It's when criminals threaten to share sexual pictures, videos, or information about you unless you pay money or do something else you don’t want to.

You should be wary if someone you’ve met online:

  • is trying to start a relationship with you very quickly

  • chats to you in a sexual way, or asks for sexual images, soon after you've met them.

  • has sent friend requests to lots of people, not just you

  • repeatedly asks you to do things that you’re not comfortable with

  • tells you they’ve hacked your account or have access to your contacts
