Purpose: Add another idea; show that you're continuing a thought.

also, in addition, furthermore, moreover, in addition, besides, what's more

Example:
Macbeth is ambitious. Furthermore, he is willing to kill to achieve his goals.

Fill in the blanks

Macbeth’s descent into tyranny is fueled by a potent cocktail of ambition and violence. His initial murder of King Duncan is a calculated, bloody step toward power. What is more, this act does not satisfy his ambition but instead awakens a murderous paranoia within him. On top of that, he proves he is willing to commit increasingly gory acts to secure his reign, such as slaughtering the innocent family of Macduff. Coupled with this, his ruthlessness extends even to former allies, as he orders the murder of his friend Banquo without hesitation. Besides, every violent choice he makes further isolates him from loyalty and reason. In addition to all of this, his relentless brutality transforms him from a celebrated warrior into a monstrous, despised tyrant.

Example:
Macbeth is brave in battle. However, he is afraid of his own guilt.

Fill in the blanks

Macbeth begins the play as a heroic warrior, celebrated for his loyalty and bravery on the battlefield. However, the moment the witches plant the seed of ambition in his mind, he becomes consumed by a dark desire for power that corrupts his very soul. Lady Macbeth initially appears to be the ruthless driving force behind Duncan's murder, on the other hand, she ultimately crumbles under the weight of guilt, descending into madness while her husband grows increasingly cold and unfeeling. In contrast to Macbeth, who embraces violence as a tool to secure his reign, Banquo resists temptation and remains honorable, refusing to act on the witches' prophecies. Nevertheless, Macbeth's paranoia leads him to murder his former friend, proving that loyalty holds no value against unchecked ambition. Conversely, Macduff emerges as the true embodiment of righteous courage; while Macbeth rules through fear and tyranny, Macduff fights out of love for his country and grief for his slaughtered family, ultimately restoring justice to Scotland.

Cause and Effect

🔄 CAUSE AND EFFECT

Purpose: Show that one thing causes another.

Therefore, as a result, because of that, consequently, so, thus

Example:
Macbeth murdered Duncan. Therefore, he became king but also paranoid.

Fill in the blanks

Macbeth hears the witches say he will become king. Because of this, ambition begins to grow inside him like a seed. He starts thinking about murder, even though he knows it is wrong. As a result, he becomes torn between his loyalty to the king and his desire for power. Lady Macbeth pushes him to commit the crime. Consequently, Macbeth kills Duncan while he sleeps. Therefore, Macbeth becomes king, but he is not happy or peaceful. He cannot stop worrying that someone will take the throne from him. For this reason, he orders the murder of his friend Banquo. Thus, Macbeth sinks deeper into violence and paranoia. He returns to the witches for more answers. Due to this, he is given false confidence that makes him believe he cannot be defeated. This led to Macbeth fighting to the very end, even when his enemies surrounded his castle. In the end, his ambition caused his downfall, and as a result, he loses everything—his wife, his friends, and finally his life.

Example:
First, Macbeth saw the witches. Then, they told him he would be king.

Fill in the blanks

In the beginning, Macbeth is a brave and loyal soldier who fights bravely for King Duncan. First, he wins a great battle and earns the king's praise. Then, he and Banquo meet three witches on the road who give them prophecies. The witches tell Macbeth he will become king. After that, Macbeth writes a letter to his wife, Lady Macbeth, sharing the news. Next, Lady Macbeth receives the letter and immediately begins plotting Duncan's murder. Soon after, King Duncan arrives at Macbeth's castle to stay the night. Meanwhile, Macbeth struggles with his conscience, questioning whether he should go through with the killing. Later, Lady Macbeth manipulates him, calling him a coward until he agrees. Following this, Macbeth kills Duncan while he sleeps. Eventually, Macbeth becomes king, but he is filled with fear and paranoia. At the same time, Lady Macbeth begins to show signs of guilt, sleepwalking and trying to wash imaginary blood from her hands. Later, Macbeth returns to the witches, who give him more prophecies that make him overconfident. Afterwards, Macduff gathers an army to fight against Macbeth. Finally, Macbeth faces Macduff in battle, where he learns that the witches tricked him. In the end, Macbeth is killed, and order is restored to Scotland.
