First, the name...
  • It wasn't called the First World War until after the Second World War.
  •  At first, people called it the Great War.

  • Germany consisted out of all kinds of small states. The most important one was Prussia. 
  • Otto von Bismarck (prime- minister of Prussia) wanted a great German empire.

  • France would never agree so the only way to achieve this (according to Bismarck) was through war.
  • France lost the Franco-German War (1870-1871 )and was humiliated.
