  • At the end of this class, you will know how to use some of these strategies in English.

Slide 3 - Poll

speaking strategies
- pick out 1/2 expressions that you really like and write them down. Use these expressions when you are practicing speaking, pay attention to how they are used in films/series/youtube videos etc.
- If you cannot think of the English word for something, find a way to describe it.
- use fillers if you need some time to think: I see, Ehm let me think, well you know..., as a matter of fact..., how shall I put it....don't use "uh" because that sounds very Dutch.

Slide 4 - Slide

writing strategies
- make a short outline, write in bullet points/keywords what you are going to write about. You can do this by shortly writing down what you will do in each paragraph.
- use synonyms, a thesaurus can help you to create variety: https://www.thesaurus.com/
-  Again describe it if you do not know the right word.
- Always proofread your text!
- when citing or paraphrasing always indicate the source (otherwise ithis will be considered plagiarism).

listening strategies
  • Is there overlap you think between reading and listening strategies?
  • je gebruikt je passieve woordenschat om de boodschap te begrijpen
  • you have to know, recognize, and be able to guess the meaning of words/expressions.
  • pay attention to linking words
  • always start with reading the questions so that you know what to focus on.

Slide 6 - Slide

listening strategies
  • Do the questions ask you to look for specific details or is it more a general idea of the video?
  • to get an idea of the central message: the message (first sentences often give away the content of a video/message, look for the central idea (hoofdgedachte), important facts are often repeated), intonation, voice, words/expressions, and pauses are important. Important facts are often preceded by pauses.
