Creative Writing Assignment – Life in the Petteflat
Imagine you are one of the squatters who moved into the monumental building in Rotterdam. You and others decided to squat in it because you feel it is unfair that there is a housing crisis while so many buildings remain vacant.
  • Describe the first day you entered the building. What did it look like? What traces of the past are still visible (for example, old vaults, bank halls, meeting rooms)?
  • Describe what it is like to live there now: the atmosphere, living together with other squatters, but also the uncertainty since you know you’re not officially allowed to stay.
  • How did you make the space your own?
  • Let your thoughts and feelings about the housing crisis come through. What do you find fair or unfair? How do you see the future—for yourself and for others searching for a home?
