Key words §3.4
Water stress (waterstress): What happens when the amount, or availability of water in an area is not enough to meet the needs of the people in an area.
Physical water shortage (fysiek watertekort): There is too little water in an area to meet the needs of the people without disrupting/damaging nature.

Learning goals

Slide 3 - Slide

Slide 10 - Quiz

Slide 11 - Video

Sustainable water management
  • Desalination plants (making fresh water from salt water)
  • Making water from the air

Slide 12 - Slide

Using less water

Slide 13 - Slide

How can you hold on to water at home?

Slide 14 - Mind map

Sustainable water management
  • Decrease runoff by building dams
  • Prevent evaporation by using more efficient irrigation
  • Genetically modified plants that use less water

Slide 15 - Slide

How to manage too much water (the Dutch way)
Three step strategy
  • Store (vasthouden)
  • Save (bergen)
  • Drain (afvoeren)

Slide 16 - Slide

Slide 17 - Slide

Store water
  • Lowers peak discharge (piekafvoer)
  • The peak happens later (more time to prepare)
  • Also waters the plants

Slide 18 - Slide

Slide 19 - Slide

Slide 20 - Slide

Save water
  • This prevents water from being part of the peak discharge
  • So it prevents floods
  • Saves water for a dry period of time

Slide 21 - Slide

Slide 22 - Slide

Drain water
  • Getting rid of the water quickly and efficiently
  • Essential in preventing floods
  • No extra benefits
