What does skimming a text mean?

Skimming

1. It's a type of speed reading technique which is useful when you want to get a general idea of what a text is about.
2. When skimming, ignore the details and look for the main ideas. 
3. Main ideas are usually found in the first sentences of each paragraph and  in the first and last paragraph.
