This conditional is used when the result will always happen.

If can be replaced by when.

First Conditional
It's used to talk about things which might happen in the future.

If you study, you will pass the test.

Second Conditional
We can use it to talk about things in the future that are probably not going to be true.

If I sold my house, I would be rich.
(I'm not going to though. Where would I live?)

We can use it to talk about something in the present which is impossible, because it's not true. 

If I had his number, I would call him.

Third Conditional
It describes the past. It talks about the past or an imaginary situation and the result is something you can only dream about.

If I had taken an earlier bus, I would have caught the train.
