Blog: How to craft a riveting press release
When promoting an event, a press release is one of the most reliable ways to get the media’s attention.

There are a few key traits common to any clear and effective press release:
  1. It fits on one page
  2. It’s written in the third-person (“they, he, she” versus “me, you, ours)”
  3.  Use neutral language.  This is not a promotional piece.  No !!!!!!

Slide 20 - Slide

The following slides are based on the Blog about How to Craft a Riveting Press Release.
How to craft a riveting press release
Follow this basic press release format for upcoming events:
  1. Headline and subheadings
  2. Body copy with event details
  3. A paragraph about the brands sponsoring the event
  4. Boilerplate information (contact information)

Best practices
  1. Keep it short and to the point
  2. Know your audience
  3. Don't leave out the good stuff
  4. Add a quote(s)
  5. Include visual(s)
  6. Always include a call to action (CTA)
  7. Always include a boilerplate  (business card)

Slide 22 - Slide

8. Boilerplate (business card): the perfect way to end a press release
Journalists want to know more about you. The boilerplate is exactly the place where they will find any additional info about your company or you. Make it fun and interesting—it works as your business card.

A boilerplate is a short paragraph at the end of every press release that summarizes the core principles of your company. Many companies have a boilerplate as part of their branding guidelines, and you should include it in your event press release template.
Here's what a press release should include.

5Ws to answer in preparation for writing your final Press Release
Who
What
Where
When
Why

Slide 24 - Slide

Background: For your graded summative assignment, you will write a press release on behalf of the Tourism Board in Rotterdam, Amsterdam or Haarlem (depending on your location). The press release is about students from Hogeschool Inholland submitting an Instagram page which is dedicated to promoting tourism in their respective
city. Student(s) will receive an Instagram Giveaway Prize for the most “Instagrammable” Instagram page.

In order to make sure you have all the important elements included in your final press release, you must first answer the 5W questions (who, what, where, when, why). See page 2 for the form you need to fill in the 5W questions.
Instructions:

Use the form on page 2 of this document to answer the 5W questions which you need later to write a press release in 350 words (+/- 10%). Write your answers in complete sentences and in your own words.

Peer Review about the answers to your 5Ws.

Slide 26 - Open question

Basically, they will have to start by reading the instructions on Moodle in the Instructions for assignment 2:  Writing a PR proposal.

give your pr preparation  structure.  But how?

The final assignment
Now that you have practiced writing in class you are ready to start writing the final press release. For your graded summative assignment, you will write a press release. You are writing the press release on behalf of the tourism board in Rotterdam, Amsterdam or Haarlem (depending on your own location). The participants will create their own Instagram page dedicated to promoting (sustainable) tourism to their chosen district in Rotterdam, Amsterdam or Haarlem. Just like you have been preparing in project 1.1, you will be focusing on the “Instagrammability” of a district in Rotterdam, Amsterdam or Haarlem, only this time your focus is on writing an effective press release.
So, the final products which you will upload into Gradework are:
1. An Instagram page with the text (and images) for your Press Release
2. A Word document with the identical text as the Instagram page for your Press Release
