Pope Leo X

Pope Leo X, the pope during Martin Luther’s time. He came from the powerful Medici family and lived like a Renaissance prince: rich, powerful and surrounded by art and luxury. He needed a lot of money to build and decorate churches including St Peter’s Basilica. One way the Church raised money was through indulgences.

Pope Innocent III (1198–1216)

There was a real 6-inch plastic action figure produced around the early 2000s. It came with a removable papal hat and a scroll with a rather cheeky Latin message.<br><div>It represents the height of papal power: he claimed authority over European rulers, launched the Fourth Crusade, and used excommunication as a political weapon.</div>

Martin Luther

• Martin Luther was a clergymen in the sixteenth century
• He had a few complaints:

1. Selling of indulgences
2. Bishops indulging and living in wealth
   
3. Torturing of heretics
   
4. The Pope making his own rules
