What Are Elements?

Elements are pure substances consisting of only one type of atom. They are arranged in the periodic table and can be metals, non-metals, or metalloids.

Properties of Metals vs Non-Metals

Non-Metals

Metals

Dull, poor conductors, brittle, can be solid, liquid, or gas, not ductile or malleable.

Shiny, good conductors of heat and electricity, malleable, ductile, mostly solid at room temperature.

Examples of Metals

Common metals include iron, copper, aluminium, gold, and silver. These are used in buildings, vehicles, wiring, and jewellery.

Examples of Non-Metals

Non-metals include oxygen, carbon, sulphur, nitrogen, and chlorine. They are found in gases, plastics, and living things.

How Do We Use Metals and Non-Metals?

Metals are essential in construction, electronics, and transport. Non-metals are vital for breathing, cleaning, fuels, and medicines.
