§3.2 Working with coordinates

In order to work your way easier through the paragraph,

Now OPEN your Notebook at the WORDLIST.

and COPY the following WORDS:

1.  to plot - tekenen        

2.  line - lijn 

3.  line segment - lijnstuk (=deel van een lijn)

4.  grid points - roosterpunten

5. the origin - de oorsprong (van het assenstelsel)

2nd portion of words:

6. lines that intersect - lijnen die elkaar snijden

7. point of intersection - snijpunt

8. to leave out - weglaten

9. a zigzag - een zigzag (in een grafiek)

10. to extend (a line) - langer maken

A zigzag is for ...

1. showing the height
2. showing the width
3. dancing the night away
4. leaving out a part of the axis

a zigzag:

The use of a zigzag:

+ if you don't use a (big) part of the vertical axis ...

+  you may use the zigzag symbol as a replacement  

(vervanging) for that part.

+ in this way your graph does not get too big!

+ we only use it for the vertical axis

+ and once upon a time in popmusic: 'The zig zag wanderer'. See next slide!

A line segment ...

1. has no beginning and no end
2. has a beginning
3. has an end
4. has a beginning and an end

a line segment has a beginning and an end!

Intersecting straight lines ....

1. never meet
2. meet twice
3. meet once
4. Google meet

A few questions about coordinates of points follow.

Key in, in the next slide, the coordinates of point B!

Point B is: .....

1. (2, 1)
2. (4, 3)
3. (3, 4)
4. (1, 2)

Explanation:

First we write down 

+  the horizontal coordinate,

+  only then the vertical one.

So:             B(4, 3)

Point C is (..., ...)

Answer this in the next slide.

1. (3, 2 1/2)
2. (2 1/2, 3)
3. (3, 2 2/3)
4. (2, 2 2/3)

Explanation:

Going from A to B:

 You go 3 grids to the right, 

you go up 1 grid.

Now we move from A to C: (it works the same from B to D!)

 You go only 2 grids to the right and up       

So the 2nd coordinate for C becomes:

                              2 +     =   2

First correct 2 mistakes, please!

1.   p.96 exercise 14b.  It says:

   'You start at (4, 0)'.    Change this into:

   'You start at (4, 20)' !

2.  p.97  exercise  C2a.  It says:

    'H (12, 18)'.   Change this into:

    'H (22, 18).     IN THE NEXT SLIDE I WILL SHOW THIS ONCE MORE!

1st mistake:

on p.96 

14b:

point (4, 0) must be:

(4, 20) !

Correct this in your

paper book, if possible.

2nd Mistake:

p.97  C2a:    H(12, 18)  must be:   H(22, 18)

Correct this in your paper book, if possible!
